Disciplining Strategies for Different Ages

Discipline for Babies Under 12 Months

Discipline for babies under 12 months might seem counterintuitive, but it is more about creating a safe and nurturing environment than punishment. At this stage, babies are explorers, learning about the world through touch and taste.

Here is how to guide their exploration effectively:

  • Creating a Safe Haven:
The foundation of discipline at this age is anticipation. Babyproof your home to minimize the need for reactive discipline. This means covering electrical outlets, securing furniture, and putting away fragile objects. By removing tempting hazards, you can avoid the frustration of saying "no" repeatedly.
  • Gentle Redirection:
When your baby reaches for something unsuitable, gently remove the object and offer a safe alternative.  This teaches them that certain things are off-limits while providing a more appropriate outlet for their curiosity.  For example, if they grab your phone, take it away and offer a teether toy.
  • Positive Reinforcement:
Positive reinforcement is incredibly powerful with babies. When they engage in appropriate behaviour, celebrate them with a smile, a hug, or a playful interaction. This reinforces the behaviour you want to see and creates a positive association with following boundaries.
  • Focus on Routines:
Creating consistent routines for sleep, feeding, and playtime helps babies feel secure and predictable. This predictability reduces frustration and tantrums, making discipline less of a battle.
  • Understanding Cries:
Babies communicate through cries, so learn to decipher their meaning. A hungry cry is different from a tired cry. Addressing their needs promptly teaches them that crying gets results, reducing the likelihood of using crying to manipulate situation.
  • Steadfastness:
Stick to the same approach for redirection and be patient. Babies are still developing, and it takes time for them to learn appropriate behaviours.  With a safe environment, gentle redirection, and positive reinforcement, you can guide your baby towards a world of safe exploration and healthy development.
